Lead times for new subsea hardware are long and have not become materially more predictable. Meanwhile a considerable quantity of serviceable equipment comes off decommissioned fields every year — trees, connectors, tie-in hardware, tooling — much of it with substantial remaining life. Treating that pool as a genuine supply channel rather than scrap changes what is achievable on a project schedule.
It only works with discipline. An asset has to be assessed against the standard it will operate to, not the standard it was built to; refurbishment has to run through a certified facility; and the documentation trail — provenance, inspection findings, remediation, recertification — has to be complete enough to satisfy the operator and the certifying body. Skip any of that and you have bought risk, not equipment.
Handled properly, the argument is strong on three fronts at once: shorter lead time, lower capital outlay and materially less embodied carbon than new manufacture. We work with certified repair centres and partners including Legasea on exactly this basis. It is one of the few places in this industry where the commercial and environmental cases point the same way without needing to be argued.
