Lithium cells now turn up in places shippers do not always anticipate: test equipment, handheld tools, sensor packages, spare units inside a larger assembly. Each of those makes the consignment a dangerous goods shipment, with consequences for packing, marking, documentation, and which aircraft or vessel will accept it at all.

The rules are detailed and are revised regularly, distinguishing between cells shipped alone, cells packed with equipment and cells installed in equipment, with different thresholds by watt-hour rating and state of charge. Getting the classification wrong is not a technicality. A misdeclared battery consignment can be refused at the terminal, offloaded mid-journey, or — in the worst case — become a serious safety incident. Carriers have limited patience and no obligation to help you correct it.
Our approach is to establish the classification at quotation stage, before a routing is promised. That means asking what is actually inside the equipment rather than accepting a general description, confirming the packing instruction that applies, and ensuring the shipper’s declaration matches the physical packing exactly. It slows the first conversation by an hour and reliably saves days later.
